featured work
These vessels and sculptural forms respond to features of the south eastern Victorian coast in the lands and waters of the Bunurong People. Landscapes of rock, fossil, sand, and shell are formed by the wind and the sea, by the creatures that live between sea and sand, and by the steps of locals, fishers, fossil-hunters, and other visitors.
The broad patterns of movement and erosion in the rocky landscape reflect the patterns of movement of thousands of sea creatures massing together where the sea meets the land. They also repeat the patterns each tiny creature follows in making a shell to fit their unique body, before discarding it to the landscape.
These patterns also repeat in making ceramics. We take clay from the earth to form it into vessels that fit and extend our bodies, pressing, spiralling, and polishing. We coat it with ground rock and fire it to high temperatures to create objects that are harder than metal and will last thousands of years before breaking down again to their elements.
By connecting to our natural and built surroundings we build a sense of self that extends the reach and meaning of our individual lives, just as a vessel extends what we can carry and hold close.
